Lesson #1 - What is CompTIA, And What is An A+ Certification

For most of you just starting out, the concept of the A+ certification may seem a little fuzzy.  It is not a course covering today's technology.  It will not mold you into an incredible computer technician.  It does not state your readiness for other programs like the CNA, MCSE or CCSE programs.  It's goal is much simpler.

First of all, let me define what the A+ certification is.   In order to standardize the level of computer technician working in the field, the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) created an exam that was equivalent to a 6-month service technician on-the-job training.  It covers computer hardware, operating systems, and some ethical and professional standards.  It's goal is to give employers the ability to determine if a service technician has the requisite knowledge to build, upgrade, troubleshoot, and repair computer systems.  Without this certification, it would be difficult to determine who has the necessary skills to take up a position as a Certified Technician.

What can an A+ certification do for you?

According to A+ Certification for Dummies, (IDG Books, 1998), there are 5 basic reasons to get your A+, and one silly one.  (I strongly recommend this book.  It's humorous, and has all the knowledge you need to complete this exam)

  • Proof Of Professional Achievement

  • Increase your marketability

  • Provides Opportunity for advancement

  • Fulfills Training Requirements

  • Raises Customer Confidence

  • And of course....  Be the Envy of all Your Friends (The author claims it MIGHT even get you a date.... Cha...  Right!!!)

Essentially, the A+ Certification provides a level of consistency and reliability in yourself, and provides security regarding your services.  This can be invaluable to your future growth in the computer industry, and is a must for getting your MCSE, CNA, or Unix/Oracle certifications.  This program is the basis for all others.

What is on the exams?

The exams themselves are based on the basics of computer hardware and software.  69 questions cover hardware, including display technology, printers, peripherals, processors, and storage media.  A second section of the test has 70 questions regarding DOS and Windows.  Below is the CompTIA exam content listings;

Installation, Configuration, and Upgrading 29% You must be able to identify and configure components and peripherals.
Diagnosing and Troubleshooting 19% Diagnose and troubleshoot common system problems
Safety 10% Identify and explain common hazards of working on computer systems, as well as precautions and environmental knowledge
Motherboards, Processors, and Memory 13% Determine the difference between similar processors, motherboards, and memory systems

How Do You Get Certified?

In order to pass the exams, you must get a 596 on the Core testing and 600 of the DOS/Windows section.  Both tests do not have to be taken at the same time, although most people will suggest you do not take them separately.  You MUST complete the second test within 90 days of completing the first in order to become A+ Certified.

To schedule your A+ exam, contact Sylvan Prometric at 800-776-4276.  They will set up a time, a date, and tell you where the closest testing center to you is located.  They can process a test application in a single day, but try to give yourself a few days in advance to gear up for the exam.  Once you pass both tests, you will receive your wallet-sized CompTIA Certificate, a wall-sized certificate, and a lapel pin.  But the real prize comes with the ability to add the words "CompTIA A+ Certified Technician" to your resume.
